Diablo 4 is Missing a Popular Series Feature
A senior Blizzard developer confirms Diablo 4 probably won't be getting a popular feature standard in many action RPGs, including its predecessors.
Diablo 4 will be missing a classic action RPG feature saw as in the franchise's past. While Diablo 4 could technically get this feature later on, it is improbable Blizzard will add it after launch.
The recent open beta for Diablo 4 saw record-breaking attendance. Blizzard has since analyzed the best and worst parts of the beta and has revealed several changes Diablo 4 will make based on player feedback. Fans can expect class balances, quality-of-life improvements, and even a change to the typeface utilized in certain parts of the game.
In any case, it seems like one unpopular feature from the Diablo 4 beta won't be changing any time soon. Many players were not happy with the minimap presented in the game. A few fans trusted Diablo 4 would eventually add an overlay map like the one available in Diablo 2. Unfortunately, senior VP and Diablo head Bar Fergusson affirmed Blizzard currently has no plans to implement such a change in the new title.
Toggleable, transparent overlay maps are a class standard feature for many ARPGs. The feature was cut from Diablo 3, but the minimap itself was enlarged and made transparent to facilitate its removal. The minimap in Diablo 4 is the smallest one in the series yet and is more opaque than its predecessors. With few options to enlarge or customize the minimap in Diablo 4, players should adjust to the new system of navigation.
A lot of players aren't happy Diablo 4 isn't adding an overlay map for the game's release. The feature was profoundly missed in Diablo 3, and many trusted it would return for the continuation. With the vast open universe of Diablo 4, an overlay map would make navigation a lot easier. Though it could stop up the screen during combat, having it as an option would just benefit the game. Many expectation Diablo 4 will consider adding this feature in the future, far-fetched as it is.
As inconvenient as it might be, the lack of an overlay map is by all accounts a rare example of complaints players have with Diablo 4. The game may not be perfect, but it is by all accounts pretty close. Diablo 4 has already gone gold, despite its release being more than a month away. With the promotion still high after the beta, it is clear Diablo 4's launch is going to be enormous, and that the game has a serious shot at Game of the Year.
