Diablo 4’s Map Is So Much Bigger Than You Think

Apr-05-2023 PST Category: Diablo4

The map for the full release of Diablo 4 looks set to make Diablo 4’s beta map seem tiny in comparison, branching out into Sanctuary and beyond.

The map for Diablo 4 is much larger than anyone realized. With Blizzard having just closed the two weekends of beta for Diablo 4, players have had their first look at the world for the new game. Many hardcore players completely cleared the map, completing all dungeons, venturing into cellars and caverns, maxing out their character, and taking down the world boss. With the wealth of content on offer, players feel hopeful that the full game will have plenty for both newcomers and series veterans to explore.

The area featured in Diablo 4’s beta map is known as The Fractured Peaks, a mountainous, glacial area which emphasizes frost-bitten enemies and harsh conditions. Importantly, The Fractured Peaks also showcase how Diablo 4 uses increased verticality in its map design to add variety to the exploration and keep players hunting for hidden bonuses. The mobs featured so far have surpassed the glorified cannon fodder of earlier Diablo games that were easily dispatched, offering more challenging enemies and more diverse encounters. Even with this impressive wealth of unique content, The Fractured Peaks is just a small part of Diablo 4’s full map.

The Full Map Of Diablo 4 Is Bigger Than Any Previous Diablo Game

Diablo 4’s beta map is only roughly one fifth of the full Diablo 4 map. Based on the leaked image of the full map (via Game Rant) in which other areas have been obscured, it appears that there will be four other areas in the full game - this matches Diablo’s typical five act structure approach to story progression. The other locations include The Dry Steppes and Kehjistan Empire in the western deserts, the swampy Hawezar jungles to the southeast and the home of the druids, Scosglen, in the north. Each of these locations offers greatly varied terrain and new communities to interact with.

Diablo 4 Leaves Room To Expand Out Across Sanctuary

Going from Diablo 4’s beta map to the map for the full game, it seems that even this is just a small part of the larger Diablo world from previous games. The Diablo series is set in a land called Sanctuary, created by the angel Inarius and Diablo 4's main villain Lilith with the power of the Worldstone thousands of years ago. Diablo 4’s full map seems to cover the top half of the eastern continent of Sanctuary, around a third of the total land mass.

It’s possible, therefore, that future DLC for Diablo 4 will branch out even further, allowing the player to visit the western continent of Sanctuary and its islands. Many nostalgic locations from previous entries in the series can only be found outside Diablo 4’s beta map, such as Mount Arreat, where Baal made his last stand, and Tristram, the main city of the past three games. This would allow players to explore the lands scarred by the Prime Evils and potentially excavate the remains of Diablo himself.

All of this excludes the other realms which have featured in every other Diablo game in some form or another, such as Heaven, Hell and the Pandemonium Fortress. Given Diablo’s history of expansions and the constant updates usually associated with MMOs, it seems certain that these realms will feature at some point in Diablo 4 even if they are not included in the main game. For now, the decision to follow the open-world trend of other video games ensures that Diablo 4 will have plenty of space to explore.
